Love and its Frumpy Friend

‘Love you are so delicate!’ said the Frumpy Friend
‘I love the way you flutter, I love the way you bend!
Can you give me lessons? I want to be like you
Please sweet love do help me, just show me what to do!’
Love smiled politely, and gave a gentle sigh
‘I’m not sure if I can, but certainly I’ll try.
First let’s sort this wardrobe, you need a pretty dress
and let’s sort out this barnett -you really are a mess!’
So Love and the the Frumpy Friend went down to the shops
And the Frumpy Friend spents hundreds on a bunch of fancy frocks
Then she got her hair done, and a chemical facial peel
And swathed herself in diamonds to really seal the deal!
‘So’ the Frumpy Friend cried ‘What do you think?’
She gave a frumpy twirl and an awkward frumpy wink
But Love had turned all grumpy and so would not reply
Instead she huffed and puffed and heaved an angry sigh.
‘Oh Love! What is the matter?’ you’re sad it’s plain to see’
The Furmpy Friend was used to seeing Love just so happy
But Love just shook her pretty head and wiped away a tear
and nothing the Frumpy Friend could do would bring her any cheer.
Eventually she spoke with a whisper and a frown
‘Even though I’m lovely, I still have my ups and downs’
You all just think I’m happy, all day and all night long
But sometimes even love can really get it wrong!’
‘I don’t mean to complain, but it’s hard being me
I wish sometimes I could relax, be stupid and carefree’
The Frumpy Friend furrowed her brow, and was quite lost in thought
If she was being honest she didn’t like the clothes she’d bought
And her face was itchy, and her feet were red and sore
She missed the comfy, scruffy clothes that she’d had on beofre
‘Love I think I’ve got it!’ she gave a beaming smile
and looked quite sweet, although her teeth were really somewhat vile
‘I’m happiest in my tracksuit, and my holey, crusty socks’
And with that she frantically ripped of her pretty frock
‘If we work together, we’ll be perfect can’t you see?
I’ll work at the friendship, and you’ll be light and free
When you need a friend, I’ll make sure that I am here
And when I want to dance and twirl, just make sure you’re near’
And so it was on that day forth they stayed side by side
For one without the other surely would have died
The Frumpy Friend was happy in her comfy pants
But occasionally with Love on a rainbow she would dance.
