The Insect Ball

insect sketchA bottle blue fly with gooseberry eyes

Was dancing his frantic love dance

For he wished to impress a fine lady-bird

And the insect ball was his last chance

With a flick of his wing, a twist of his knee

He jived his way through the throng

With a nod to the DJ –Big daddy L

The music then switched to his song

The crowd fell silent, they watched him come

And they rubbed their hands with glee

A beetle slurped loudly through his wiggly worm straw

And was stung in the neck by a bee

The bottle blue fly –Fredrick by name

Flexed out his hand to his love

So wrapped up in the sheen of her polka dot shell

He did not see what was happening above

Above his black head, a green spider had webbed

A disco ball of light

‘Look up to the sky’ she spitefully hissed

As she licked her thin lips with delightspider web

Fredrick the fly, without second thought

Looked up to the glowing sky

Its light hypnotised his tiny dumb brain

And so up he began to fly

The crowd gasped in shock, as up Fredrick flew

Right into the spiders bright trap

And then turned away in pain and dismay

As she bit off his head with a snap!

All eyes turned to Susan (his ladybird lover)

Expectant of tears, screams and fright

But she just turned her back to Fredrick’s remains

And then scuttled off into the night

It turns out that Susan shacked up with an ant

So here is the moral of the tale

Never try to impress someone out of your league

For like Fredrick you’ll probably fail.
